For all she’d intended to make a night of it, it didn’t happen. Hamburger consumed, halfway into her second cocktail weariness hit like a tsunami. One moment she was high on the adrenalin of this afternoon’s rescue, the ridiculousness of the night’s sunburn victim, the realisation that she could walk away with no compunction if anyone wanted to sack her. The next it was almost too much effort to raise her glass.

She put her glass down on the table and noticed, with some annoyance, that her hand was suddenly shaking.

‘Had enough?’ Ben asked mildly, and she flashed him a look of annoyance. That was the type of comment Mathew would have made.

‘I can drink more if I want to.’

‘I wasn’t talking about alcohol. I was talking about you. Today. These past weeks. This whole set-up.’

She looked at him uncertainly, not sure whether to take offence or not. But his eyes were kind.

As Mathew’s had been, she thought, but Mathew being kind was different. Mathew being kind was smothering. Mathew thought he knew what was best for her.

The whole town had thought they knew what was best for Anya and her mother.

Why was she thinking about that now? Why was she suddenly feeling...odd?

‘I guess I have had enough of today,’ she said, but her mind was still intent on this puzzle. Why did it feel so different, the way this man asked how she was feeling? ‘I... It’s probably time for bed,’ she managed but her sense of confusion was growing.

‘I might be headed that way too,’ he told her in a voice that said her decision was just that—her decision. ‘It didn’t do my back or leg any good at all, hauling an idiot out from under a jet-ski. What I really need right now is a massage. I bet there are scores of masseurs on this island. Should I ring for room service? How do you think that’d go down?’

And that made her grin. ‘So...the new doctor on the island would be calling for the island masseur at midnight on his first day on the job...’

‘Hardly a good look?’

She chuckled. ‘Possibly not.’

But... I could give you a massage. The thought was there in her head, almost bursting to be said out loud. She’d done a massage course. Her mother had had arthritis along with everything else, and she’d loved doing that for her. She was actually pretty good.

But not here. Not with this man. Despite her weariness, alarms were sounding all over the place.

‘You’ll just have to sleep it off,’ she said instead, and pushed the remains of her cocktail aside. ‘Bedtime for the island doctors.’

‘For the new roomies,’ he said and rose and held out a hand to help her up. ‘I hope you don’t snore.’

‘The feeling’s mutual, Dr Duncan,’ she told him. ‘But, even if you do, I reckon sleep is only minutes away.’
